Demolition Begins on Long-Vacant Blackburn Building to Make Way for Parking Lot

Amarillo Globe News - Demolition of the Blackburn Building began last week on Polk Street amidst a number of downtown revitalization projects. It is the second edifice razed in less than a year along that corridor to make way for parking.

David Driskill, the executive director of Texas Tech's Urban Tech Design Center, has strong feelings about tearing down existing buildings and replacing them with parking lots.

"The worst thing that could happen to a city is more surface parking. It's deadly," Driskill said. "They are literally a hole in the urban fabric, like a moth hole in a sweater."
