Speak Up! Contest Offers Chance to Hone Communication Skills

The competition features speakers from public speaking and communication classes.

WHAT: Speak Up! contest sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies in the Texas Tech University College of Media & Communication 

WHEN: 6 p.m. Tuesday (May 5)

WHERE: Allen Theatre, Student Union Building

EVENT: Speak Up! gives students the opportunity to display their oral communication skills in a competitive format. Contestants come from the public speaking and business and professional communication classes, and the field is narrowed to six finalists.

The competition stresses the importance of oral communication, which communication studies professor Leanne Lagasse said ranks high on the list of attributes future employers seek in job candidates.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.

The top three teams will earn cash prizes – $500 for first place, $400 for second place and $300 for third place. The audience also will choose their favorite speaker for the evening, and that speaker will earn $100 as the People’s Choice. Also, a member of the audience will be eligible to win an iPad 2 Air.
