Architecture Students Win Design Competition

Texas Tech team competes to develop a health and wellness center.
A Texas Tech University student architecture team won first place at the second annual Healthcare Symposium Exhibition & Social’s (SES) Student Healthcare DESIGN INTERVENTION. The 2014 theme was Healthcare at the Edges: Urban Growth and the Decentralization of Care.
The challenge was to design a health and wellness center in an existing building and its surrounding parking lot within the team’s respective communities. Teams from Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at San Antonio competed against Texas Tech’s team to propose a solution to an adaptive re-use project.
Texas Tech’s team, representing College of Architecture’s HealthCare Facilities, worked on the design since January, creating an environment that is therapeutic, welcoming, operationally efficient and accommodating to technology.
The winning team included students Katherine Anglin, Kyle McAlonan, Erika Meyerkord and Collin Zalesak, and their academic advisor Saif Haq, associate dean of research for the College of Architecture.
The student competition is an extension of the SES event and was organized by the Committee On Architecture for Health and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Houston. Judging took place last month by an independent panel of healthcare architects and stakeholders.
