Texas Tech Eclipses 33,000 Enrollment for First Time

The increase maintains the university's course of achieving a goal of 40,000 students by 2020.
Texas Tech University officials report record enrollment figures for the fifth-straight year as 33,111 students are in fall classes. The figure represents a nearly 16 percent increase over the last decade and was accomplished following a second-straight record year of more than 7,000 degrees conferred.
“What a wonderful time to be at Texas Tech University,” said Texas Tech President M. Duane Nellis. “Through the efforts of our graduates, faculty, staff and students, and the foundations they laid, more and more students annually are reaching out to Texas Tech to continue their education.”
The increase maintains the university’s course of achieving a goal of 40,000 students by 2020, which supports the Texas Tech University System’s goal of nearly 60,000 students among its four institutions during the same time period.
“For the first time in our history, Texas Tech University is enrolling more than 33,000 Red Raiders,” said Chancellor Kent Hance. “Thanks to the hard work of our faculty, staff and administrators, we reached this significant milestone while also enhancing our student diversity and academic quality.”
Among the highlights of the 2013 Texas Tech University fall class:
- A record 6,308 Hispanic students;
- A record 2,044 African-American students;
- A record 4,892 first-time undergraduate students;
- A record 2,657 transfer undergraduate students;
- An 82 percent retention rate of last year’s freshman class, the highest since 2007;
- A 5 percent increase in enrollment for the Whitacre College of Engineering and its first 5,000-plus enrollment;
- A 4 percent increase in enrollment for the Rawls College of Business, College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources,
and College of Media & Communication.
“Our admissions staff has worked diligently to guarantee we continue to grow and bring in the best and brightest students, while maintaining a standard of academic excellence among our incoming classes,” Nellis added.
