Texas Tech Student Health and Rec Center Kick Off the New Year with a Hot Start

Students are encouraged to bring in the new semester with a night of salsa dancing.

As part of Texas Tech University’s Raider Winter Welcome Week, the Student Recreation Center will host a Salsa Night Friday (Jan. 20) from 10 p.m. to midnight.

“This is a great event for students and what better way to kick off their semester,” said Scott Layher, assistant director of marketing for Recreational Sports. “It’s a late night activity that’s free, fun, and may be a little out of their comfort zone. We are here for the students and are we are trying to provide programming that best fits our student population.”

Whether a beginner or an advanced salsa dancer, students are invited to enjoy the beat –and heat – of salsa. Salsa instructors will show students new moves, as well as raffle off salsa lessons to students who check in to the event on the Guns Up All Night facebook page. Impact Tech, a group of peer health educators on campus, and student athletes will be serving up “mocktails” such as raider punch, and providing chips and salsa donated by United Supermarkets.

Salsa Night is an effort of Student Health Services, the Student Recreational Center, Texas Tech Athletics, and the Alcohol Prevention Coalition, comprising organizations from both the Texas Tech campus and the Lubbock community.
