The Texas Tech University School of Music will host the 33rd Annual Madrigal Dinner during the first week of December.

This year’s dinner features a French flair and marks the return of the king and queen. The Student Union Ballroom will be transformed into a festive, ancient banquet hall with the main stage in the center, showcasing singers and court entertainers that will delight guests during the royal feast.

The West Texas Children’s Choir and the Texas Tech Graduate Brass Quintet also will perform.

Madrigal singing, brought to England from Italy in the 16th century, was initially a form of entertainment at the castles and country homes of the refined nobility. Now, the rich musical heritage and pageantry of this age is once again brought to life by costumed singers, musicians, dancers and entertainers.

Royal Scholarship ticket holders are invited to attend a pre-dinner champagne soiree in the ballroom with private performances hosted by the king and queen. Lords and ladies of the Court, dressed in the latest Elizabethan fashion, offer a feast for the eyes as they process in grand style with flowing gowns of the richest velvet and silk.

During the feast, members of the court entertain on two stages and quartets of minstrels serenade each table. The evening’s revelry crescendos toward the anticipated musical offerings of the Court Madrigalists. Christmas carols and madrigals fill the hall through the rich and elegant voices of the Texas Tech Madrigal Singers. The performance concludes with the traditional candle-lit recessional.

The Royal Scholarship Soirees begins at 6:15 p.m. Madrigal dinners are at 7 p.m. Dec. 2, and 4-6 p.m. at the Student Union Ballroom on the Texas Tech campus. Guests should park at the School of Music, located at 18th Street and Boston Avenue.

Royal Court Tickets cost $140 available, and general admission is $55. Reservations can be made by calling Rebecca Webb at the School of Music at (806) 742-2225.
