Keith Brigham, Tyge Payne and Jeremy Short were awarded for their article published in Family Firm Institute's international conference in Chicago.
Three Texas Tech professors were acknowledged for their achievements at the Family Firm Institute's (FFI) international conference in Chicago.
Jeremy Short, Tyge Payne and Keith Brigham, professors of management, were awarded for their article published in FFI's quarterly journal, Family Business Review. The piece won FFI's Best Article published in 2009.
Short, the lead author, with Tyge Payne, associate professor; Keith Brigham, assistant professor; Chris Broberg, a former doctoral student now at Wichita State, and former Rawls College faculty member Tom Lumpkin, who is now at Syracuse University wrote the article "Family Firms and Entrepreneurial Orientation in Publicly Traded Firms: A Comparative Analysis of the S&P 500."
The article expands on the apparent considerable disagreement about whether family firm characteristics hinder or support entrepreneurial activities. Further, it highlights the existence of an entrepreneurial orientation in family firms, and it examines differences between family and non-family firms on the dimensions of autonomy, competitiveness and aggressiveness.
"Our research suggests that the large, publicly traded family firms that we examined project themselves in a manner that seems less entrepreneurial than other, non-family, firms in the S&P 500," Short said.
The honor was sponsored by Norelli & Company and presented by Ron Norelli at an awards ceremony during the conference, known as the leading annual professional event in the family enterprise field. The ceremony was held to honor those helping to shape the future of the profession of family firms through critical thinking.
The Rawls College of Business accounts for about 25 percent of Texas Tech graduates.
