Texas Tech SPICE Opened New Chess Park on Campus During Girls’ National Competition

The Texas Tech Chess Park opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Texas Tech University and the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) opened the Texas Tech Chess Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. July 27 during the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls. The chess park is the first dedicated U.S. chess park at a university and is inspired by the New York Central Park chess court. An anonymous donation of $320,000 funded the park and is also used for scholarships to attract chess players to Texas Tech. The ceremony was attended by Texas Tech administrators, city officials, and participants of the 2009 Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls. The Invitational for Girls is being held in the Frazier Alumni Pavilion July 26-31. The park is located between the Student Union Building and the University Library at 15th Street and Akron Avenue.
