Texas Tech University’s social media presence has been ranked among the top in the country, according to CollegeAtlas.org.

The website ranks colleges according to individual social media platforms as well as overall social media influence and engagement. Texas Tech came in at No. 29 Most Influential College in Social Media, No. 10 for Most Influential College on Instagram, No. 12 Most Influential College on Twitter and No. 17 Most Influential College on Google+.

The rankings were developed using data including Facebook “likes” and ratings, tweeting frequency and the number of followers on each social media platform.

Allison Matherly is Texas Tech’s coordinator of digital engagement in the Office of Communications & Marketing. She oversees each of the university’s social media platforms.

“Texas Tech’s social media provides an avenue for students, alumni, prospective students and fans to connect with the university,” Matherly said. “We strive to build relationships while listening and engaging with our audiences. Our recent ‘I Am A Red Raider’ campaign has put the storytelling into the hands of Red Raiders everywhere, allowing for them to take ownership of our social media platforms in a whole new way.”

CollegeAtlas.org aims to provide comprehensive and unbiased information about universities, degrees and academic programs. The website publishes rankings that help students make important higher education decisions. According to General Manager Brandon Neish, social media helps the website measure difficult-to-quantify, yet important, aspects of higher education such as collegiate experiences and alumni impact.

“In recent years, social media rapidly emerged as an essential source of communication and information for our audience, especially prospective students,” said Chris Cook, managing director for the Office of Communications & Marketing. “It is important that we continue to support an open dialogue with our audiences, while exploring new uses of social media channels. Congratulations to Allison and her team for keeping Texas Tech out front.”
