Seattle Post Intelligencer - Rare photos: Star’s explosive death seen in previously photo'd patch of sky

It blew up 73 million years ago – but for us, it happened practically overnight.

“It is very rare to catch a supernova within a day or two of explosion,” said David Sand, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics at Texas Tech University. Sand had developed a special spectroscopic camera that allowed the researchers to get the image.
