Major retailers say their extended and cheaper layaway programs successfully spurred holiday shopping across the nation this year, contradicting several surveys that found the opposite.

Deborah Fowler, an associate professor of retail management at Texas Tech University, suspected the surveys might have yielded results that contrasted with what retailers reported because shoppers may prefer to keep their financial behavior private.
