More than 4,000 Lubbock area youth and their families are more prepared for the 2012-2013 school year, after attending the 12th Annual Back to School Fiesta on Saturday (Aug. 11) at Texas Tech.
The event moved back to the Student Union Building after spending the last several years at the United Spirit Arena. Hosted by the Office of Community Engagement, the event provided free school supplies, college resources, free food and entertainment for members of the Lubbock community. Families were also provided with educational information on topics ranging from college admissions and financial aid, financial planning, childcare resources, and health, wellness and nutrition.
Nearly 60 organizations and entities participated as partners and hosted tables and booths. Interactive activities for children included a robotics demonstration from the College of Engineering, an educational activity center hosted by Generation Texas, a climbing center hosted by Bodyworks, chess lessons by the Texas Tech University Chess Program, a physical activity booth hosted by Cardinal’s Sport Center, meet-and-greet with Texas Tech athletes, meet-and-greet with Chuck E. Cheese and a balloon animal giveaway with Mr. Gatti’s Pizza. Entertainment was provided by Ballet Folklorico and Flatlands Dance Studio.
“We’re thrilled with the success of this year’s event,” said Heather Martinez, associate director of the Office of Community Engagement. “Thousands of people are learning about Texas Tech and we hope to continue this tradition for years to come.”
