Wellness Center Offers Tips to Stay Cool in the Heat

Summer weather has arrived early and students should attempt to stay indoors as much as possible.

Summer may officially be just around the corner, but summer weather has arrived early. With temperatures predicted to increase in the next few months, Dr. Kelly Bennett, assistant professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, recommends students stay indoors as much as possible. For those who have to be outdoors, Bennett gave a few tips on staying cool in the heat.

  • Wear light colored clothes, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen
  • Utilize shade
  • Drink plenty of fluids, such as sports drinks and water
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages
  • If able, take breaks and get indoors

If you start to feel nauseated, dizzy or stop sweating, seek medical attention and place ice around your neck, armpits and groin.
