Hollywood Reporter – He started his career at age 15. Pelley grew up in Lubbock, Texas, and got his start in journalism at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The paper had a policy of not hiring employees under age 16, so Pelley lied about his age, according to the Texas Tech College of Mass Communications alumni magazine. He also had his mom drop him off two blocks away from the newspaper office’s so none of his co-workers — or bosses — could see that he couldn’t drive.

Science Daily – “The World Trade Center site was the first major real-world evaluation of robots as tools for USAR,” says Keith Jones, an HF/E researcher at Texas Tech University. “Overall, the robots performed well. One problem that did surface, however, was that the robots got stuck, a lot.” Jones, with coauthors Brian Johnson and Elizabeth Schmidlin, published a study of USAR robot teleoperation in a special issue of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making on human-robot interaction.

Joelle Fuhrmann will be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force working in the 60th Civil Engineering Squadron at Travis Air Force Base, specializing in environmental engineering. She hopes to help bring clean, safe drinking water to communities around the world.
