Texas Tech and Cisco College will enter into a partnership that will offer a Bachelor of General Studies degree at the Cisco home campus and extension campus in Abilene. The announcement was made today (Aug. 20) by the presidents of both institutions.

The partnership will create a new convenient undergraduate degree option for residents in the area.

“We are very excited to be able to partner with Texas Tech and offer this opportunity to our students in Cisco and Abilene,” said Colleen Smith, Cisco College president. “This collaboration further strengthens our region by providing additional access to higher education.”

Courses will initially be offered through distance education via online and interactive video conferencing. In-person instruction will be offered at a later date to be announced.

“This partnership only enhances what already is an outstanding educational program at Cisco College,” said Texas Tech President Guy Bailey. “We are proud to partner with Texas community colleges and extend the reach of Texas Tech’s educational mission beyond our campus and give residents in these areas an opportunity to obtain a four-year degree.”

The agreement also will allow Cisco College students to seamlessly transfer coursework to Texas Tech.

SHOOT’EM UP RED RAIDERS !!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I HAVE HEARD IN MY LIFETIME. SERIOUSLY, I AM 53, AND GOING BACK TO SCHOOL. I LEFT TECH IN 1978, WITHOUT DEGREE. THIS IS AN OMEN FOR MY LIFE !!!!

This is a great relief for me. I am almost 50 years old and work full-time,with two more semesters at Cisco College. What a nice transition this will be for me, to continue with my present job and stay here in Cisco for my Bachelors degree. Great news!!

Texas Tech is slowly turning into the “Krispy Kreme” approach! I am proud of my two degrees from TTU, but feel that the school is losing its uniqueness and quality as it continually partners with smaller schools and clouds its name. If we are going to partner, change the name of the school to Texas Tech – Abilene! not “Cisco Junior College, now offering courses for Texas Tech”. I have no idea how it benefits TTU to cloud its coursework, standards, and name by just partnering with other schools. Other campuses that come to mind are TTU – Fredericksburg, TTU Marble Falls, TTU Junction, TTU El Paso, ETC.

(Tech already has an Abilene campus as well as the Cisco partnership.)
Such campuses are a very ‘green’ approach to higher education. Considering the spectrum of courses that Tech has to offer and the range of public interests, this is a great match to meet a growing need. Satellite campuses exist for several reasons such as energy conservation for commuters, as well as increased visibility through outreach to communities whose prospective students will eventually end up in Lubbock.

The days of a cameo university are becoming passe. Even Harvard offers evening credit classes at a fraction of the cost and academic achievement requirement.
Opportunity + demand = a bigger, better Tech.
