Texas Tech Honors Outstanding Faculty

Dozens of Texas Tech faculty members received awards for their quality teaching and research during the annual Faculty Honors Convocation.

“Texas Tech is fortunate to have an outstanding faculty,” said Bob Smith, provost. “I am honored to present these awards to some of our best and brightest. The annual convocation is a way to recognize the very best in teaching, research and service in our academic community.

The President’s Academic Achievement Awards go to faculty members who have demonstrated distinction in teaching, research and service.

The President’s Academic Achievement Award recipients are:

  • Nancy Bell, College of Human Sciences
  • James Smith, Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering.

The President’s Book Award, given to outstanding faculty authors, went to:

  • Gretchen Adams, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Kurt Caswell, Honors College
  • Ronald Kendall, The Institute of Environmental and Human Health
  • Steven Presley, The Institute of Environmental and Human Health
  • Galen Austin, The Institute of Environmental and Human Health
  • Philip Smith, The Institute of Environmental and Human Health

Twelve faculty members received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award:

  • Scott Burris, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
  • Brian Zugay, College of Architecture
  • Justin Hart, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Carmen Pereira-Muro, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Richard Strauss, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Herschel Mann, Rawls College of Business
  • Kathryn Button, College of Education
  • Audra Morse, Whitacre College of Engineering
  • Ben Goh, College of Human Sciences
  • Michael Hatfield, School of Law
  • Glenn Cummins, College of Mass Communications
  • Christopher Smith, College of Visual and Performing Arts

Receiving the Outstanding Researcher Awards are:

  • Reynaldo Patino, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
  • Saif Haq, College of Architecture
  • Ann Hawkins, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Ronald Kendall, The Institute of Environmental and Human Health
  • Roy Howell, Rawls College of Business
  • Eva Midobuche, College of Education
  • Ken Rainwater, Whitacre College of Engineering
  • Bryan Camp, School of Law
  • Tom Johnson, College of Mass Communications
  • Janice Killian, College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Texas Tech Association of Parents presented multiple awards to:

  • Barnie E. Rushing Jr. Faculty Distinguished Research Award: Julian Spallholz, College of Human Sciences
  • Faculty Distinguished Leadership Award: Wendall Aycock, associate dean of the Graduate School
  • Hemphill Wells New Professor Excellence in Teaching Award: Michelle Kwon, School of Law
  • Spencer A. Wells Award for Creativity in Teaching: Deborah Fowler, College of Human Sciences

The Texas Tech Alumni Association New Faculty Awards went to:

  • Sandra Rideout-Hanzak, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
  • Chris Taylor, College of Architecture
  • Sean Cunningham, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Loretta Rudd, College of Education
  • William Lawson, Whitacre College of Engineering
  • Mitzi Lauderdale, College of Human Sciences
  • Trent Seltzer, College of Mass Communications
  • Jeffrey Lastrapes, College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching and Research Award Winners are:

  • Edward Anderson, teaching, Whitacre College of Engineering
  • Seshadri Ramkumar, research, The Institute of Environmental and Human Health.

The Horn Professor Graduate Achievement Awards were presented to:

  • Esther Delaquis, School of Art
  • Chisum Pierce, School of Art
  • Noe de la Sancha, Department of Biological Sciences
  • Miryam Doris Venegas-Anaya, Department of Biological Sciences.

The Gloria Lyerla Memorial Library Research Travel Grants were presented to Brian Zugay in the College of Architecture and Ali Duffy in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The Teaching Academy Department Excellence in Teaching Award went to the School of Law’s Legal Practice Program. The winners of the Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards were also recognized.
