As conflict enters ninth year, D.C. conference considers how insights from Vietnam could apply in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Texas Tech’s Vietnam Center and Archive and The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a conference focused on applying lessons learned in Vietnam to the U.S.’ two current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The two-day conference, “Lessons Learned, Lessons Lost: Counterinsurgency From Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan,” takes place from 8:45 a.m.-5 p.m. March 4 and from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. March 5 at the Kenney Auditorium of the SAIS Nitze Building in Washington, D.C.
Experts from academia, government, the military and think tanks will speak throughout the conference.
The Vietnam Center and Archive has hosted its annual conference in Lubbock since 1993. This is the center’s first time to host the conference outside of Lubbock and in coordination with SAIS.

The real lesson of Vietnam was that America should not have been there in the first place. You can debate whether the war was winnable or not, and historians still do, but not whether it was worth winning. Subsequent experience has shown it was not: defeat meant conceding IndoChina to communism but this did not impact US security or anything else.
