The Texas Tech and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Black Faculty and Staff Association will honor Lubbock’s first African-American pharmacists during the Ninth Annual Black History Month Opening Ceremony. Photos provided by the Caviel family.
The event, which honors Alfred and Billie Caviel, will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Forum Room of Texas Tech’s School of Law.
Association members chose to honor the Caviels for their 49 years of service and leadership to the community as Lubbock’s first African-American pharmacists.
“The Caviels retired last year, and we wanted to commemorate the hard work and dedication that they gave to the Lubbock Community for nearly half a century,” said Wendy Tolson Ross, an associate professor of law and secretary for the association. “They are pioneers in Lubbock, and their contributions made a difference in the lives of their customers as well as the community as a whole.”
The banquet honoring the Caviels is free, but seating is limited. Attendees must respond by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, to Aretha Marbley at 742-1997 ext. 268.
