Texas Tech University’s cheerleaders, pom squad members and mascots notched up a number of honors, including rare fully paid bids to the national championship, at the 2009 National Cheerleaders Association/National Dance Association (NCA/NDA) College Summer Camp. Eleven Texas Tech cheerleaders earned NCA collegiate all-American spots during the camp, held July 28-30 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kans. The team finished with the top overall score and won the title of most collegiate, or the team that showed the most school spirit, earning a full paid bid to the 2010 Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. The team also won first place for its spirit-rally and game-day routines. “Winning in the categories we did meant a lot to us,” said squad captain Davey Massoth, one of the all-Americans. “We are trying to be not only a competitive squad, but also a collegiate squad, and one of our top priorities is promoting Texas Tech spirit and image.” The Pom Squad boasted two all-American dancers and 10 nominations and was selected as both the most spirited and most collegiate team at the camp. It won first place for its game-day routine as well as the top overall dance score and won a full paid bid to the nationals as well.

The team really came together; everyone stepped up and worked hard,” said co-captain Holly DeHaan. The four students who take turns in Texas Tech’s Raider Red costume received all-American mascot awards and Raider Red was selected the most collegiate mascot — an honor bestowed by the other mascots in attendance. “I think this really shows how strong Texas Tech’s spirit programs are, from our mascots to our dance team and cheer team,” said one of the students who wears the costume, whose identity will not be revealed until his term expires.
