Juan Munoz joined Texas Tech in 2004. His new position will build upon his current work in matters of institutional diversity and equity as well as community engagement.
Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey announced Feb. 17 that Juan Sanchez Munoz has been named vice president of institutional diversity, equity and community engagement.
This is a new position created to build upon work already underway at the university.
“Matters of diversity and equity are vitally important at Texas Tech University,” Bailey said. “By combining our efforts, I believe Texas Tech can better meet the challenges we face in recruiting, retaining and graduating students.”
“This new position provides a central office to work with units across campus to continue to develop a climate where all members of the campus are successful,” Munoz said. “The success of the university is predicated on an environment that is academically and professionally supportive for all students, faculty and staff, equally.”
Munoz joined Texas Tech in 2004. He has served as special assistant to the president for institutional diversity and associate vice provost for faculty affairs. As an associate professor in the department of curriculum & instruction, he also serves as director of the Center for Research in Leadership and Education and program coordinator for bilingual education and diversity studies in the College of Education. Munoz earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a master’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles and his doctoral degree from UCLA.
Munoz was recently appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to serve on the board of directors for the Texas Department of Housing and Community. He also is a board member for the Texas Diversity Council and is a director in Texas Lyceum, a group that brings together diverse opinions and expertise to focus on critical state issues. He also is a founding and current board member of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education.
Munoz is the past president for the board of directors of the Lubbock Boys & Girls Club, current vice president on the board of the South Plains Boys Scouts, a Lubbock Civil Service Commissioner, a board member for Covenant Health System and an advisory board member for American State Bank.
